 Charted in April 1955, as the first undergraduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® in the state of Delaware. Delta Lambda chapter is located on the campus of Delaware State College (now University) - (DSU). At the time of its chartering, Lillian R. Sockum was the President of Epsilon Iota Omega chapter, the supervising chapter for Delta Lambda chapter, Marjorie H. Parker was the North Atlantic Regional Director and Dr. Jerome Holland was President of the school. 

The charter members of the “Sweet” Delta Lambda are Claudette Bishop Evans, Alice Maull Carter (deceased), Doris Swigget Glenn, Anita Watson Hammond, Mary Maloy Scott (deceased), Reverend Jean Allen Wilson (deceased), Elvira Wilson Harris, Marva Bond Smith, Bertha Turner Morris (deceased), and Nora Harmon Steele. Today, the chapter has a membership of more than 25 members. 

In an effort to maintain progressive interest in college life, the Delta Lambda chapter creates entertaining, educational and community service oriented programs for the students of DSU and the Dover community. 

Throughout the chapter’s history, the members have been recognized numerous times by the North Atlantic Region and the University. Most recently these awards include:

  • Nyjah Smarr - Student Government Association Treasurer 2024-2025

  • Alaysia Gregory - Miss Senior 2024-2025

  • Inaaya Coleman - Miss Delaware State University 2023-2024

  • Inaaya Coleman - Miss Junior 2022-2023

  • Jewel Phillips - Miss Delaware State University 2021-2022 

  • Candice Powell - Miss Junior 2021-2022 

  • Alexxis Sanchious - Student Government Association Recording Secretary 2021-2022

  • Ashlee Davis -  Miss Delaware State University 2020-2021

  • Nikela Roderique - Student Government Association Recording Secretary 2018-2019

  • Tahlia Casey - Senior Class President 2018-2019

  • Taylor Worrell-Stith - 2019 Leadership Fellow

  • Courtney Davis was Miss Senior for the 2016-2017 school year; 

  • Shahira Singh was Miss Junior for the 2016-2017 school year; 

  • Chascidy Reeves was Miss Delaware State University for the 2013-2014 school year; 

  • Shaquiera Walker was the 2nd Place 2015 North Atlantic Region Officer of the Year and recipient of an Educational Advancement Foundation Scholarship; 

  • 2014 North Atlantic Region Undergraduate Exhibit 1st Place Winner;

  • 2015 2nd Place Exhibit winner; 

  • 2013 and 2014 DSU Homecoming Step Show Champions;

  • the 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 DSU Stroll Competition Champions; 

  • DaVina McGill was a 2012-2013 Peace Corps Campus Ambassador;and 

  • 2011 DSU Sorority of the Year.

 

This legacy of achievement and service continues today.  

  • Several members have been inducted into the North Atlantic Region’s 4.0 Club since 2015.  

  • A’Sian Rochester was a 2016 Summer Leadership Fellow.

  • The chapter, along with Epsilon Iota Omega and Tau Omicron, won the National Voter Registration Day Award (Connection).

  • The chapter has consistently been recognized by the Standards Committee for on time reporting and excellence. 

  • Mia Jones was crowned the 2017 Miss Delaware USA.
